Coming into Ketchikan is a bit shocking after being out with very few other boats or distractions. There are tugsandtows, cruise ships, fishing boats, big and small. And then there are float planes arriving and departing at very low altitudes, roaring overhead. Trying to stay out of the way and get where you are going takes two of us. Today there were three mega cruise ships in town. Tomorrow there are to be six! Apparently, this is going to be a big summer for those. So far, surprisingly, we have been unaffected by them--they seem to be using the outside passage to get here and back to Vancouver, BC or Seattle.

This is our haul of groceries and laundry, which we managed to get done with no rain!

These next few are showing the town, but mostly the shades of gray clouds.

... we always get a laugh out of the Avg Child Care Center... for average children, I guess. LOL...

Down the dock at Bar Harbor South Marina.

A lot of empty slips right now...

It is definitely a working harbor with gil netters, trollers, divers, crabbers... but check out those clouds!

Geared up for Day Two errands. It is very wet! When we came on the trip 2 years ago, we quickly realized our Puget Sound rain gear wasn't going to cut it here, so we invested in the Alaska uniform: Grundens pants and coats and Xtratuff boots. We stay nice and dry.

Dinner at the Oceanview Restaurant. They serve Mexican and Italian food. The Mexican was delicious!

The weather forecast. Local people have told us they had really nice weather over the last few weeks, so maybe it is raining in BC, too, now. But Ketchikan is the rainiest town in Alaska with 140-160 inches/year. So... this really isn't unusual.

While walking up the dock, we were able to watch this Bald Eagle...

Our watermaker hasn’t been working up to par, so our guy in Seattle sent us a replacement. David installed it yesterday, but it was leaking a lot. He thinks he cross threaded one of the fittings. He’s figuring it out further today. I’m ok with staying in one place longer. Doing some deep cleaning and got caught up on the blog, planning for the next month itinerary and menus.

About Us

The salt water has been part of our lives for over 40 years, and we have owned sailboats for most of those.  We love the PNW and all that it has to offer with the beautiful Salish Sea, access to the Pacific Ocean and the wildlife that inhabit these areas.  We have the opportunity to expand our usual areas of exploration this year, and will depart May 24, 2021 for SE Alaska.
