We ended up staying at Bar Harbor South for a total of 6 nights! Ugh. I came down with a terrible virus that felt like Covid all over again, but apparently wasn't since I tested negative twice. It was a doozie, though, and I was in bed for 4 of these days with fever, cough and muscle aches and fatigue. Not certain where I picked it up, but thankfully David has remained well.

The rain kept falling, the wind blew, and we got our part for the watermaker in the mail and installed. Saturday morning, the sky cleared some and the wind slowed, and we realized we could leave and get to an anchorage before the next bout of wind. David packed us up and we got off the dock and headed across Clarence Strait to Prince of Wales Island.

The skies cleared, but the water was a bit choppy.

Entering Cholmondeley Sound.

Entrance into Kitkun Bay from Cholmondeley Sound is tricky. There is a narrow area with rapids, and numerous rocky shoals to avoid. But being nearly land locked would give us calm waters.

We transited the rapids at high slack, so the water was calm.

David returning from a run out to our shrimp pot. We watched a black bear grazing for hours on the grass and sedge behind David in the photo.

He caught a bunch of large spot prawns! We froze what we aren't eating tonight or tomorrow. I have so many recipes to try!

All cleaned and ready to cook!

One night we made Venetian Shrimp with Polenta. It was delicious! The texture of spot prawns is similar to lobster. Here is the recipe link, in case you are interested: https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/venetian-shrimp-polenta?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&u

We had a pleasant 2 nights here, and I am finally feeling on the mend. Off to explore some more of this island today.

About Us

The salt water has been part of our lives for over 40 years, and we have owned sailboats for most of those.  We love the PNW and all that it has to offer with the beautiful Salish Sea, access to the Pacific Ocean and the wildlife that inhabit these areas.  We have the opportunity to expand our usual areas of exploration this year, and will depart May 24, 2021 for SE Alaska.
